James M. Sutton, the man who gave Crater Lake its name, dies of rheumatism, in Ashland, Oregon after a long illness. Sutton was born in Morgan County, Illinois, June the 29th, 1830. He emigrated to Oregon in 1851 and settled in the Rogue River valley in 1854. In early times he engaged in mining and afterwards became a druggist in Jacksonville. While living in Jacksonville, Mr. Sutton was also the editor of the “Sentinel”. In the later years of his life, Sutton founded the Ashland newspaper, “The Tidings” (from his obituary in the Tidings)
