Investigator’s Annual Reports (IAR’s) for Crater Lake National Park
Origin of the Magma Chamber Under Mount Mazama
Report Number: 12695
Permit Number: CRLA1991AADD
Current Status: Checked in
Date Received: Jan 01, 1998
Reporting Year: 1991
Principal Investigator: Geoffrey Miller, National Research Council of C, Ottawa, Canada
Park-assigned Study Id. #: CRLA1991AADD
Permit Expiration Date: Jan 01, 1998
Permit Start Date: Jan 01, 1998
Study Starting Date: Jan 01, 1980
Study Ending Date: Jan 01, 1992
Study Status: Completed
Activity Type: Other
Subject/Discipline: Geology / General
Objectives: To find hard evidence supporting a proposed gas-volcanic theory for the origin of the magma chamber.
Findings and Status: Two masses of breccia have been found on the rim in the predicted region, showing strong evidence that they are of gas-volcanic origin. Several small samples of breccia from these masses have been collected and are presently being analyzed in an effort to prove this origin.
For this study, were one or more specimens collected and removed from the park but not destroyed during analyses? No
