Objectives: This research sought to provide an initial inventory of bumblebees (Bombus) within selected sites of Crater Lake National Park (CLNP). Plants species visited by Bombus were also observed and recorded. This research in intended as groundowrk for developing future studies investigating relationships between native pollinator and native plants at CLNP as well as other areas in Southern Oregon.
Findings and Status: Fifteen specimens of Bombus and two specimens of Psithyrus (cuckoo bumblebees) were collected and/or sighted from three survey sites. Collections were comprised of 5 species of Bombus (B. bifarius, B. flavifrons, B. mixtus, B. occidentalis, and B. vosensenskii) and one species of Psithyris (P. insularis). Bumblebees were first sighted on 14 July on the Annie Creek Trail. No drones or workers were ever observed at any of the surveyed sites during the entire sampling period, although Bombus workers were observed at nearby areas (Steel Information and Visitor’s Center and Dutton Trail) late in the sampling period (24 August and 3 September). A total of 10 specimens were catalogued with the catalog numbers CRLA 9207-9216. Currently, the specimens reside in the SOU Insect Museum (Biology Department, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd. Ashland, OR 97520) but will be deposited in the Crater Lake National Park collection (Crater Lake, OR 97604) by the summer of 1999.
For this study, were one or more specimens collected and removed from the park but not destroyed during analyses? Yes
