Crater Lake to be subject of museum lectures

A variety of programs revolving around this year’s Crater Lake National Park centennial celebration are planned in the Klamath Basin and Southern Oregon.
The Klamath County Museum, for example, is offering a lecture series at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday monthly at the museum. The museum will also display historic Crater Lake photographs and memorabilia April through June.
Activities include:
May 16 — Roseburg centennial reception for featuring the Will Steele drama at Douglas County Library in Roseburg with performances at 2 and 7 p.m.
May 18 — Centennial reception and presentation of the Will Steel drama at Oregon Institute of Technology. Play begins at 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Shaw Historical Library. For information call 885-1686.
May 18 — Klamath Tribes centennial reception at the Tribes administration office in Chiloquin. Emphasized will be the Tribes relationship and history associated with Crater Lake.
May 22 — Medford centennial reception at the Craterian Theater.
June 2002 — Kla-Mo-Ya Casino Centennial Relay Run.
June 28 to Oct. 5 — Crater Lake Centennial Art Exhibition at the Schneider Museum of Art at Southern Oregon University in Ashland.
July 4 — Fourth of July celebration in Klamath Falls. The parade will feature a Crater Lake Theme. (800) 445-6728.
July 20 — 21st Annual Rocky Point Barbecue and Garden Festival featuring the raffle of a handmade quilt celebrating Crater Lake centennial.
August 2002 — Kla-Mo-Ya Casino Crater Lake Car Cruise a road rally and car show with the rally route to include Crater Lake National Park and surrounding areas.
Aug. 2 to 29 — Art show featuring Crater Lake at the Klamath Art Gallery, 120 Riverside Drive. Hours are Thursdays to Sundays from noon To 4 p.m.
Aug. 10 — 27th annual Crater Lake Rim Runs and Marathon, distances of 6.7, 13 and 26.2 miles, all beginning 7:30 a.m. at the Watchman overlook. preregistration required. Contact Crater Lake Rim Runs, 5830 Mack Ave., Klamath Falls, OR 97603, telephone 884-6939.
Aug. 25 — Crater Lake National Park Re-dedication ceremonies at the park.
Aug. 26 — Crater Lake National Park Employee Reunion, open to former National Park Service employees and past concessionaire employees.
September — Kla-Mo-Ya Casino will host a Western barbecue with proceeds donated to a group or organization associated with the centennial.
Sept. 14 — Second Annual St. Jude Benefit Motorcycle Ride featuring a Crater Lake Rim Ride.
Oct. 4 to 6 — Crater Lake Symposium at Southern Oregon University, sponsored by the college and Oregon Institute of Technology.
