Ranger Lloyd Smith was a seasonal ranger at Crater Lake National Park from 1959 to 1981.
“I just scanned in a roll of b/w negatives from bears eating at the famous garbage dump at Crater Lake. We used to take friends there to do a tour of the pit. It was located just behind Steel Circle. Did this for years. They would dump the garbage and then set it on fire. Some [it] burned bears. We had one we called “Patches” because of the burned spots. I counted 19 bears one time I was in there. They were everywhere. We did not have telephoto lenses, shot with 50 mm lenses.
