Study Status: Completed
Activity Type: Research
Subject/Discipline: Petrology / Mineralogy
Objectives: On August 11, 1998, we collected four samples of rhyodacite from Crater Lake National Park. These samples have been added to our data set of approximately 55 samples of silicic volcanic rocks. We hope to use these samles to better constrain the values of partition coefficients between feldspar and liquid during rhyolite petrogenesis.
Findings and Status: We analyzed the Crater Lake samples (along with others from elsewhere) during the past winter and spring for whole-rock major and trace element chemistry. We are currently preparing mineral separates in order to analyze them, so we may calculate partition coefficients for feldspar. The four Crater Lake specimens will be housed in the geology department.
For this study, were one or more specimens collected and removed from the park but not destroyed during analyses? No
