Objectives: This research sought to document the diversity of native Bombus species within Crater Lake National Park (CLNP). Plants species visited by Bombus were also observed and recorded. This research in intended as groundowrk for developing future studies investigating relationships between native pollinator and native plants at CLNP as well as other areas in Southern Oregon.
Findings and Status: A total of five different Bombus species and 24 specimens were sited and/or collected in Crater Lake National Park during 1999 field season. The park was visited on July 15 (no Bombus were sited or collected), July 30th (two Bombus bifarius queens were sited but not collected) and September 8th (total of 24 Bombus specimens were collected representing five different species, flavifrons, bifarius, mixtus, occidentalis and vosnesenskii). On September 8th, three sites ;within the park were visited; Steel Visitor Center, Wildflower Trail and Dutton Trail and thirteen Bombus, three Bombus and eight Bombus were collected respectively. At the Steel Visitor Center 7 B. flavifrons (6 workers, 1 drone), ;5 B. bifarius workers and 1 B. vosnesenskii worker; at wildflower trail 1 B. mixtus worker, 1 B. bifarius queen and 1 B. flavifrons worker; at Dutton trail 3 B. occidentalis workers, 4 B. bifarius workers and 1 B. mixtus worker were ;netted, pinned and labeled. All specimens are currently housed in Southern Oregon University Insect Museum but will eventually be transferred to Crater Lake National Park.
For this study, were one or more specimens collected and removed from the park but not destroyed during analyses? Yes
