Study Status: Continuing
Activity Type: Research
Subject/Discipline: Herpetology (Amphibians / Reptiles)
Objectives: Conduct field surveys and assess status of species of management concern. We propose to develop a database on past and recent distribution records, and relate habitat variables that will provide better opportunities to protect these particular species and their breeding habitats. Our focus in southwestern Oregon will be on the Cascade frog (Rana cascadae) and western toad (Bufo boreas) on NPS, USFS and BLM lands.
Findings and Status: We surveyed at least 4 lentic sites during summer 2001 for cascade frog and western toad breeding. Larval and juvenile western toads confirmed breeding in 2001 within the crater itself. Western toads were also encountered near the Munson Meadow complex. Due to the drought year, most of the other sites were almost completely desiccated at time of July/August surveys. We plan to contact Park staff and resurvey these sites in summer 2002, which appears to be a more normal precipitation year. We also utilized the Crater Lake National Park museum collection to confirm historical localities within and outside park boundaries.
For this study, were one or more specimens collected and removed from the park but not destroyed during analyses? No
